Thirteenth Boston Marathon finish! I always thank God, family and friends. I must specify a few folks on this one. Thanks to my dad for his life of example; to Carl for words of perspective; to a woman from mass this past Sunday who encouraged me to run to Jesus; and to my cousin Stacey. Stacey is undergoing an unexpected health crisis bravely. I used my race as a prayer to her and also thinking that I can endure a few hours in the elements while she undergoes something infinitely more difficult.

On race morning I had all of those things in mind. I really could have been very easily thrown off mentally by the wind, cold and rain, beginning with stepping outside my hotel door, but I tried to soldier on in my mind and in my movement. On the bus to Hopkinton, I was seated to a man named Raphael who was from Spain originally but now resides in London. Wonderful conversation with him! The Athlete's Village in Hopkinton was a soggy, muddy mess. Even though I got a spot under one of the huge tents and I sat on a trash bag liner, the ground was about as solid as if you ran a slice of bread under water. There was no turning back now. Finally as my second wave was called on the loudspeakers, I just wanted to get running to physically get the body warmer and to start the goal for today. Sounds cliché, but truly for me that day, the goal was only to FINISH, as smartly as I could. The strong headwind and weather made me ignore any time goals I had. I mainly thought of running for Stacey and being patient with myself for 26.2 miles.

What a HUGE relief to actually start running! Physically warmed me up and I was doing what I set out to do. The crowds may have been a bit thinner than usual, but they were as enthusiastic as ever, plus the volunteers were amazing as usual. At some point I got used to the ridiculosity (if that is a word) of running with the headwind, rain and cold and even enjoyed it...not all the time though! Thankfully I was surrounded by folks who had the same goals and dreams, so I was far from out there alone.

About mile 4 I heard someone say "are you alright?" and looked over to the center of the road where a young woman had taken a nasty fall. She was crying and a man right there helped her up...thank God for that or she could have been easily trampled in the confusion of the race and the weather conditions. I went over and helped her get to the side of the road and out of the heavy traffic of the runners. A friend of hers who was not running side by side with her realized her fall and came back to help. She comforted her but also encouraged her to get back out there and run with her. Soon they took off and the two of them were another inspiration for me that day.

The advantage of running the race several times for me was the familiarity of the route. Kind of like when you are a kid with a long but familiar car ride ahead, where the businesses and the hills, trees and other sites were markers to help you along. Most of you know how I loathe the cold, so I began the race with tons of thin layers, thinking that I would start getting overheated in a few miles and take off one layer at a time as needed. That never happened! Although I wasn't shaking cold like pre-race, I wasn't hot either and I didn't want to loose any layers. The "moisture wicking" gear and shoes were getting heavier as the race went on. And I needed windshield wipers both on the front and inside of my glasses. Just think of Stacey and what she is going through, I kept telling myself. Each of the cities of Hopkinton, Ashland, Framingham, Natick, Wellesly, Newton, Brookline and finally Boston brought their own familiar sights of relief that I was slowly accomplishing the goal.

As much as I could, I tried to take in the experience of the Boston course. I knew that I stood a better chance of going one on one in basketball with Lebron James than I did with "fighting" the weather, so I truly just ran by feel and thinking of the energy needed to make the entire distance. Even though it was a slow race for me, I am pleased with myself that I ran pretty consistently, even through the Newton Hills. I did take a few walk breaks, but not many and not for long. Everything after Heartbreak Hill is a relief for me. Soon you are on a serious downhill and the cheers from Boston College await. I had mentioned to my Rhode Island cousins Vivian and Mary Lou (who have always watched me at Coolidge Corner, mile 24) that if the weather is horrible as predicted, that I would not be offended if they decide not to come to the race. Thankfully they decided not to attend, but I still took inspiration from them as I passed Coolidge Corner. Soon Kenmore Square, the Charlesgate, Mass Ave underpass and the right of Hereford, left on Boylston came up. AND the glorious finish under the decorated canopy across from the Boston Public Library on Boylston Street! It is always emotional to finish any marathon, and this one today was special.

Thankfully my hotel was near the finish. As soon as I stopped running, my body temperature was like an ice cube. I told my sister that I may not have been the fastest runner in the race, but that I was one of the fastest walkers post race. Got warmed up and called and texted family and friends. Huge congrats to all runners, including Jackie, Gary W., Erik, Shawn...and to Desi for the win!

It is always true that I could never have taken a step in any race, let alone finish, without God. It was true today more than ever. And thanks also to everyone who got me through it, ESPECIALLY Stacey. This one was for you!

focuz: Faster, Better, Stronger
On Monday, I completed my my sixth marathon. It was my second Boston Marathon and was just as memorable as my first. This is a race that I have been looking forward to and training for with everything I have in me for months. But just seven days before I ran this race of a lifetime, I was trying to hold back tears and failing as my coach told me that I shouldn't run Boston that next week. I had told him that I had not been able to run yet again that morning even after a full week off of running. As we talked some more and my other coach came on the phone, we decided to take it day by day and see how I felt on marathon day before I decided if I wanted to approach that start line or not.

Tuesday I felt a bit better but I was nowhere near ready to attempt to run because the pain was still too much. It was also on this day that I knew how much our grandma was failing and I spent nearly six hours with her at the nursing home, at one point crawling into bed with her and cradling her in my arms. Wednesday I wasn't quite ready to try running again yet, but I knew I was getting closer. It was a long day filled with physical therapy, chiropractor, massage, and an hour of aqua jogging but we ended the day with a celebration with my closest friends and my family for a send off before Boston as I was leaving the next day. That night grandma's vitals were stable and she was resting easy.

I woke up the next morning with determination that today would be the day that I would run. I did a good warm up and started off slow, but I was able to reach a nine minute mile pace that was comfortable by the end of my three miles. I wanted to go farther but I knew not to push it. I became more confident that I would actually be running in Boston and I was just elated. I was on my way to my last physical therapy session before heading to work that day when my husband called with the devastating news that grandma had passed away that morning. That light I was seeing at the end of the tunnel completely dimmed. She was a shining light in our lives and this loss was felt tremendously.

That day is a bit of a blur, but we tried frantically to change our travel arrangements as we were also trying to figure out funeral arrangements with our family and once again the tears were falling and I was at a complete loss on what to do. We made the decision that my husband would stay behind and I would go to Boston with our two kids and keep our same travel plans. We would miss the visitation but still get home in time for the funeral. A quick call to one of my best friends who has been one of my training partners throughout my Boston training found her ready, willing, and able to go to Boston with me and I felt my first sense of relief since running that morning.

The days flew by quickly leading up to Marathon Monday and I spent a lot of time relaxing at the home of our friends and eating all their food ;) The weather forecast kept looking worse and worse and I started to become concerned that I didn't pack the right types of clothing for the race. We made a stop at Target the night before the race where I found some warm extra throw away clothes that I could keep on right up until the race start. I bought a rain poncho at the running expo with a silver liner and a hood to help with keeping me warm and dry and that was one of my best purchases I could have made. I spent about an hour in runner's village before the race where it resembled a cattle yard with mud everywhere. I spent all of my time waiting in line for the port-a-potty and was able to get to the front of the line about five minutes after they had called for my starting wave.

I met a girl behind me in line as we were waiting and she offered me her bag to keep my extra shoes warm and dry and a pair of hand warmers to put in my gloves. She and I were only one corral apart in the same wave so we decided to stick together. We started on our way towards the start at the same time that they called the next starting wave which caused us some issues in getting to the start due to the amount of extra people finding their way to the start with us. We had a mile walk to the start and halfway there we both had to go to the bathroom again and also needed to change into our dry shoes and remove all our outer clothes. By the time we had gotten to the front of those lines and changed, we had completely missed our starting wave. Some of you tracking me may have noticed that I didn’t start when I should have, and that’s the reason behind it. Nature calls!!!

We were forced to wait in corral two of the third wave because the race officials would not let us go to the front. So we stood in the pouring rain for another 15 minutes until we were released. I was so very excited to be starting this race in Boston once again, and the smile on my face didn't go away, even in the cold downpour and blowing wind. My new friend and I started off and she told me that she usually ran her first three miles at about a 7:30 pace. I was good with this as long as my calf felt ok because this was the pace that I had been training for. We stuck together through the first mile, and halfway into the second mile, she wanted to go faster. As much as I wanted to go with her and have someone to run with, I also knew that I needed to run my own race at my pace so we gave each other a quick high five and she was on her way.

I was intent on holding a steady pace and I was running mostly on feel. I was in awe of how my calf felt and thought this just may be my race, even in the awful weather. Between mile four and five I started feeling a tightness in my calf and panicked a little. I started praying. I knew all of this was in God's hands and He was going to lead me to whatever was best. After about half a mile, the tightness went away. Answered prayer. Framingham was once again one of my favorite spots in the race and I really enjoyed that section. The girls at Wellsley this year must have brought their A game, because I started hearing them a long ways before I even got there, they were so much louder this year! I was also in awe of the amount of spectators on the route and the cheering even in the cold rain and wind. Die hard fans for sure and they made us runners feel like heroes.

I held my pace well through about mile 8 and then I started feeling the effects of the weather. By mile 10 I had slowed a bit and could feel both of my legs beginning to cramp. I took out my packet of leg cramp pills and was able to get three of the four in my mouth, dropping one of them with my numb fingers. My time at the half marathon gave me hope that I just may be able to get a Boston Qualifying time out of this race after all. It was enough to merely be running it, and my goal that morning was to come in under four hours, but I remained hopeful based on how the race was going.

I was still running strong but then the bigger hills started coming along. Due to our horrible weather this winter, I had not trained on hills as I normally do. I reached the hill where I had become dehydrated last year and where I had started walking last year. This year I steeled myself that I would not walk that hill, or any of the hills for that matter. One of my goals was to make it to the top of heartbreak hill without walking. These hills broke me down, over and over again. I thought of everything I could to get me through. I picked a focus point in front of me and reminded myself how tough my coaches said I was, of everyone cheering me on back home, of my cross country team and the challenges they had faced and overcome, of Grandma Lucy. I was slow going up those hills, but I did it. No walking. I was pretty triumphant at the top of that hill, for good reason.

The first mile after the hills, I felt pretty good. I picked up my pace, and remembering how my race went last year, I knew that I had really picked up my pace in the last few miles. I figured it would be the same for me this year, but I was so very wrong on that. I had about four miles to go, and there was hardly anything left in my tank. Both of my legs started cramping up. I searched frantically in my belt for the second packet of leg cramp pills and I couldn't find them. I later found them after I returned back to our friends' home. It was just not meant to be. I started to do a run/walk at this point. My calves hurt so badly and when I was walking, it was very cold and miserable, so I tried to get myself to just run through the pain, but this only lasted for short bursts. But he crowds cheered me on even more when I walked it seemed, probably because they could see me struggling and I heard lots of shouts of Go Nebraska as I went by them. I was still able to give them a smile as I reminded myself to find the joy, over and over again. As my daughter says, YOU CHOSE THIS!

When I reached the 24 mile sign, I knew I was so close to the end, yet it seemed so very far away. I was still walking quite a bit, especially on the uphills. I continued to pray and think of my loved ones back home and pictured the finish line and the crowds on Boylston street. I knew I could still get there in under four hours. With about a mile and a half to go, one runner in a daze tripped and fell. Four of us women running near her surrounded her and helped her to her feet. She was bleeding from her legs and her hands but she was on her feet and moving slowly ahead. I told her I was staying with her to ensure she was ok and she tried to send me on my way. I refused to leave her side and ran with her for about half a mile until I knew that she was going to be ok.

It was shortly after this that I was struggling with my resolve to run to the end. I didn't know if my calves would allow it. I briefly considered stopping at the medical tent to have someone massage my calves. I was a little worried that they may stick me with an IV though, and I knew that even if I did a run/walk, I could still finish in under four hours. My pride won out and I kept going past the medical tent. Suddenly, I ran by a Nebraska Husker hat lying in the middle of the street. I smiled to myself and kept going, but then decided I wanted that hat to finish my race in, and I turned around and went back and got it. What a great opportunity to represent my state and home and I wondered about the person ahead of me who had left it behind and what their story was.

Once that hat was on my head, I ran full force ahead and didn't stop. I knew where my family and friends would be waiting for me near the finish, and I spotted them before they saw me. My friend Kayla said that she saw the Husker hat first, and then looked down and saw it was me. I knew by this time that I would be beyond another Boston Qualifying time, so I took this opportunity to kiss my children, hug everyone and tell them thank you for being there. Those are moments that I will never forget. Those moments right there, to see the smiles on the faces of my children and how proud they were, made every single struggling step worth it.

The end was in sight. I was in tears and both crying and smiling as I ran towards that finish line. I had done it. It really was nothing short of a miracle. I finished over seven minutes faster than I had the year before in some of the worst running weather I have ever experienced, with an injury that had allowed me to run very very little over the last four weeks. There were very few things about my training cycle or this race that were as I had envisioned them. All of it was a roller coaster. But one thing was the same as what I had envisioned. The joy that all of it brought to me. The satisfaction. Knowing that I had given it my all to the very end. Using this gift that has been granted to me. All of the struggle was so worth it.

But this was not the end of this journey on Marathon Monday. I still needed to get to my family and friends. I received my medal, photos were taken, I got my water, grabbed my bag of food, and kept walking towards the area we had agreed upon. I made it there, stood under the letter F, answered a congratulatory phone call from my husband, and made a couple of phone calls to my friends to let them know that I was there. Both calls went to their voicemails. I had very little battery left on my phone due to the wetness and cold temps so I sent them each a text as well. I felt like I had waited for about 30 minutes outside in the pouring rain, getting colder and colder until I realized that I was becoming dangerously hypothermic. Right across the street was a warming center that runners were allowed to enter.

I made my way inside where it was still cold even inside and I was directed to an inner room in the building where there was theatre seating. I began taking off my wet socks and shoes when someone said my name. I looked up, saw a girl huddled in a seat in the back of the theatre with her hood up and didn't quite recognize her. First I thought it was the girl I started the race with, so I said her name and she shook her head. So then I believed that it was my teammate Nicole, and she shook her head again when I said her name. Finally I ran barefoot over to her and said I don't know who you are! She took down her hood and said, it's Nicole! It was my teammate from Lincoln. I was never so glad to see someone I know and love. We hugged, talked about the race and fretted over finding our family members. She had been there for quite a while and finally her bag of warm clothes arrived from her husband outside. She gave me an extra pair of warm socks and we hugged goodbye as she went on her way wishing she could do more for me, but we both knew that she couldn’t at this point.

I was still struggling to get warm, I had stripped out of all of my three shirts I had been wearing and used some warm hand towels that one of the volunteers had given me to place under my armpits and wrap up my feet. I asked several volunteers if they would be able to go across the street and tell my family and friends where I was at. They all refused and said they couldn't leave the building. None of them had phones that I could use to call because all of their batteries were dead too. I couldn't help but think that this had to be similar to the after effects of the bombing but on a smaller scale. Runner after runner was being wheeled into the warming center in wheelchairs with their bodies completely shaking and their lips blue. I was grateful for the condition that I was in and that it wasn't as severe as that although I did briefly think if I did have to receive medical attention, someone there would surely have a phone!! I asked two more volunteers if they would go across the road to try to find my family and they told me that they were nearly at the end of their shift and maybe I should just warm up and do it myself. Really?!?

At this point, I was pretty worked up and thought, you know what, I WILL do just that. So I put my soaking wet shoes back on, tried to wrap up as well as I could in those towels, and shoved my way out the door. I made it through the crowds and across the street, and the looks of relief on the faces of my loved ones as I caught sight of them and made my way towards them are something else I will never forget. One of them had tried to go up to the building I was in at one point but couldn't get close and decided that they would just wait where they were. They were so worried about me, and I felt completely awful about how cold and wet they were, but there was relief all around as they gave me my dry clothes and I ran across the street once again to get changed. I was never so happy to get that dry clothing on, and I was in such a hurry to get changed and back to them so everyone could get warm and dry, I wondered if I had grabbed my shoes to put in my bag as I ran back across the street. I knew they were another pair that I could just get rid of because there was no way I was going to fight my way back inside, but I caught a glimpse of them in my bag and continued on my way.

It took us another 10-15 minutes to walk to the train station. When we got there, we found that we had just missed the train and the next one would be leaving in an hour. Our friend Kate had our train tickets on her phone, but her phone was dead, so she headed over to an attendant to see if they would be able to be retrieved. They could not and we would have to buy a whole new set of tickets if we couldn't find a way to charge her phone. She told us that this is when we rely on the kindness of strangers. I immediately started praying and I kid you not, within 30 seconds, I saw a police officer standing in a group of other officers in front of me with a charger in his hand. I went right up to him with the biggest smile of relief on my face and asked if he would be so kind to allow us to use it for a bit. After a bit of joking around with us, he complied. It was just one more amazing God wink in this chain of wild events on this day.

It was about this time that I started wondering if in my haste to leave after changing if I had even grabbed my finisher's medal. When our train arrived and we boarded, I started taking everything out of my bags and my heart sunk as I realized it really wasn't there. All that work, and not even a medal to show for my efforts. I told myself that this is not the reason that I run and medal or no medal, it had still been a very successful day and some lifetime memories were made that I'm sure my children will be telling their children someday, even without a medal to show for my efforts.

We made it back to our friends' home by 7 pm that night. Nothing is a hop skip and a jump in this area and I'm so grateful for the ease of travel where I live. It was at this time that I looked at my instagram and caught a picture of a runner that I follow on there. The hat that she was wearing in the picture that she posted looked suspiciously like the hat that I had picked up. I sent her two pictures of myself wearing the hat, asked if it was hers, and said that it was just what I needed to help me through the race. She responded that yes, it was her hat, it had blown off her head at mile 25.5, she knew it was meant to be, and she was glad that it had found it’s way to another Husker. 30,000 runners, and I was able to figure out where it came from. How freaking cool is that. It was just one more God wink in the day.

Although this is probably the worst feeling marathon I have even ran, it was also one of the most memorable. And yes, I have lived to love and run another day, and I am NOT stopping. I’ll be taking some much needed time off to really let this calf heal up and I am so grateful that I was allowed to run in this race, and in Grandma Lucy’s memory. This is a day that I will, never, ever forget, and one that I hope that my children won’t ever forget either.
